CRYSTAL LAKE - Sept 2010 NEWS UPDATE
from CLCA President - Bill Lee

CRYSTAL LAKE SEPTEMBER UPDATE- October 7th, 2010

How soggy was September? Our garden rain gauge recorded 165 mm (5.7 inches) of precipitation. Last September, there was 40 mm (1.7 inches). Some parts of the Lake experienced a power outage that lasted for about 20 hours (from Thursday night- Sept 23rd to Friday afternoon- Sept.24th)

2010 MUNICIPAL ELECTION: Hopefully, you have received the Fall Newsletter from the CLCA in the mail. Historically, it is mailed out every 4 years to coincide with the Township’s mailing of the election ballots. Whether you agree with the suggestions and recommendation of your Executive or not, take time to mail in your ballot. Be part of the solution, not the problem. Remember, the Election is Monday, October 25th, 2010. A huge thank-you goes out to Jill Bradley, our Membership Secretary. This summer, she spent countless, tedious hours updating our mailing list.

LOONS/ WILDLIFE INVENTORY: It appears that there is only one immature loon this year. It is still being accompanied by one adult. In September, these two loons were the only ones still swimming around our Lake. The Wildlife Inventory kind of took a break over the summer as far as recording observations on the calendar. Of note, 3 otters were seen on Clear Bay at the end of August and also at the end of September. Cottagers with birdfeeders note that there is a lot of activity. A cow moose was seen crossing the Galway Road between the Fire Hall and Highway 121.

HUNTING SEASONS: Just a friendly reminder that Duck season is already on. Moose season is for one week, the third week of October. Deer season begins on November 1st for two weeks. Also remember that Sunday Hunting is now allowed in GCH. It would be wise to wear bright clothing if walking our roads and trails.
CRYSTAL LAKE DAM: If you have not been by the dam lately, there is some activity going on in preparation for the re-facing of the dam. All the stop logs (8 ˝ logs) are stacked on top of the dam. The lake level is being held by large sandbags. The lake water is flowing through twinned culverts through the dam opening, emptying into Nogies Creek. This is leaving the face of the dam high and dry and ready to be re-faced. A construction trailer, a dumpster, and a port-a-potty are on scene. The work should commence shortly.
