CRYSTAL LAKE - Oct 2010 NEWS UPDATE
from CLCA President - Bill Lee

OCTOBER UPDATE- November 7th, 2010

Greetings!

Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en have come and gone and so have most of our cottagers from Crystal Lake. Our garden rain gauge recorded 75 mm (3 inches) of precipitation for the month of October. The rain gauge has been put away for this year. Even with the temporary dam in place, the lake level is slightly above normal for this time of the year.

2010 GALWAY/CAVENDISH/HARVEY TOWNSHIP ELECTION RESULTS:
37. 4 % of eligible voters cast a ballot on Monday, October 25th, 2010. The Council members elected for the next four years are:
Reeve- Janet Clarkson
Deputy-Reeve- Ron Windover
Councillor-At-Large- Madeline Pearson
Galway/Cavendish Councillor- Don LaCombe
Harvey Councillor- Bev Matthews

WATER READINGS: On November 1st, I took the final water reading of the season. The series of readings were mailed to Dorset, the home of the Lake Partner Program. Two readings (secchi disk and water temperature) are taken for the lake at two locations (Clear Bay and out in the Main Lake). The readings are usually taken twice a month starting in May and ending in October. This year’s results were consistent with the last few years with secchi disk readings ranging from 5m to 7m. The highest water temperature was 28 degrees C (in mid-July). As of this week, the lake temperature was 11 degrees C.

ANOTHER DAM UPDATE:
Also on November 1st, I stopped in at the Crystal Lake Dam. I chatted briefly with the two workers that were present. The workers are preparing to re-face the dam. The forms had just arrived. The workers stated that it will take most of the winter to complete this project.

WILDLIFE INVENTORY:
Some of the migratory birds have been passing through our Lake area. There are still robins around as well as loon(s). Owls are starting to be heard in the evenings again. The moose hunt has ended. I know one of the hunt camps along the Crystal Lake Road shot a bull moose. Deer season has entered its second week. Once again, be careful if you are out and about. Wear brightly coloured clothing if you do not have blaze orange.

SHOUT OUTS:
A huge thank-you goes out to all our volunteers that dutifully place the orange buoys out on the Victoria Day weekend and collect them on Thanksgiving weekend. Their dedication helps to keep our boaters and boats safe from our lake’s numerous rock shoals. Once again though, not all of Crystal Lake’s rock shoals are marked by these orange buoys and after Thanksgiving and before the Victoria Day weekend, none of the shoals are marked!
