CRYSTAL LAKE COTTAGERS’ ASSOCIATION INC.-
MAY 31, 2011
Greetings!
A rather cool and soggy May has just about come to an end. Our garden rain gauge recorded 65 mm (2.5’’) of precipitation. Weather lore has it that “ The way the weather is on Good Friday morning is the way the weather shall be for 40 days.” Well, today was the 40th day and, according to my calculations, this old saying’s accuracy rate was 57.5%. Last year’s rate was 70.0 % and the year before was 67.2 %.

2011 AGM:
It is hoped that many people circled this date back in January and shall attend our AGM this Sunday. Remember, it is your Association. There will be an opportunity to pay your membership fee at this meeting if you have not already done so. Membership fees can also be paid using the Internet via our website. Remember also to BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug).
2011 is an election year for our Board of Directors and for our Executive. All positions are open to nominations and/or volunteers. Don’t be shy! Elections shall be held towards the end of this meeting.
Guest speakers this year include: OPP Inspector, Brent Anderson, and District 3 Fire Chief, Craig Burk.
LAKE LEVELS:
Our Lake is full! According to the Haliburton Area Superintendent for the Trent-Severn Waterway, our lake level yesterday was at 2.74 m. That means that Crystal Lake is at 100 % storage. However, please use caution if touring in your boats. Thanks to our dedicated crew of volunteers, our buoys are in place for another season on the water. Remember, if a buoy “drifts” into your place, leave it on your dock or along your shoreline so the volunteers can easily spot it and return the marker to its proper location. Also, because of the high water levels, logs, boards, branches, even barrels have become dislodged and are floating about the Lake. Watch Out!
WILDLIFE:
The loons should be nesting by now. Please, if you are travelling into potential loon nesting bays, go ‘Dead Slow’ to avoid any wake. Several of the possible loon- nesting locations are under water this year.
The turtles are on the move- slowly! Please slow down as you travel our cottage roads. Just today, I moved 2 Painted turtles from Hwy 121 near the Crystal Lake turn.
New additions this month to our Wildlife Inventory include:
• two Nighthawks swooping over Clear Bay
• An American Kestrel along Allen’s Alley
