May 7th, 2010 CLCA SPRING NEWSLETTER:
The newsletter is in the mail. Cottagers should be receiving them either late this week or early next week. (I hope) This newsletter has also been posted on the website.
WATER LEVELS:
The lake level is slowly creeping upward. The weather has been a huge factor in the lack of water in Crystal Lake. As an example, the rain gauge in our garden measured 23mm for the month of April this year. Last year, it measured 122mm for the month of April. In the first two days of May, we received 48mm of rain- double that for the entire month of April! Peterborough set two records this April- the warmest and the driest.
LOONS:
On Clear Bay, we started off with a lone loon for the first couple of weeks. Then, there were three. Now, we have a pair. The thinking is that the pair of loons drove away the single loon. On a sad note, an adult loon was found dead floating out in the Main Lake. It was discovered by fellow cottagers out for a boat ride. These cottagers were going to try to contact the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey people.
BLACKFLIES/ MOSQUITOES:
Yes, there back! If there can be any good news, there have been sightings of bats and tree swallows swooping over the Lake catching these bugs. I also saw a dragonfly on April 24th!
